Description
The Claddagh is one of Ireland’s best-loved ring designs, and this is the traditional version of it: two hands cradling a heart, topped with a crown. Each element carries meaning – the hands for friendship, the heart for love, and the crown for loyalty. It’s a lot of sentiment packed into one small, elegant design, which is part of why it’s given so often for engagements, weddings and anniversaries.
There’s a nice bit of history behind it too. The design comes from the fishing village of Claddagh, near Galway, and is tied to the story of Richard Joyce — a local man said to have been captured by pirates and sold into slavery, where he learned goldsmithing. When he was freed and returned home, he made the first Claddagh ring for his sweetheart, as a token of love that had lasted through the years apart.
How you wear it says something, by tradition. On the right hand with the heart pointing outward, your heart is still free; turned inward, it’s taken. On the left hand with the heart inward, you’re engaged or married.
The ring itself is polished sterling silver, with fine detailing along the cuffs of the hands, a smooth raised heart at the centre, and a slim, comfortable band. It’s a nicely proportioned piece – clearly a Claddagh, but understated enough for everyday wear.
