What size earring for conch?
There is no one-size-fits-all because everyone's ears are different. The size
of conch earring for you will depend on your ear shape. It will also depend
on how close to the edge of your ear the piercing is. If you told the piercer
that you planned on wearing a hoop, they will have pierced closer to the edge; whilst if you told them
you wanted to wear a bar, the piercing will be closer to the center and better suited to a labret than a hoop.
The most common guage for a hoop-style conch earring is 16g. This equates to 1.2mm. Hoops for conch piercings range from 10mm to 14mm in diameter.
For most people who have had a conch piercing intended ultimately for a hoop (although your piercer will have used a bar initially), around 10mm will give you a nice snug fit. Some styles (such as our double and triple hoops) look fine with a larger diameter - with the larger sizes, the fit is less snug and the hoop will hang down a little but it suits the design. The slightly larger diameters also work better if you have bigger ears or your piercing is further from the edge of your ear!
Materials for your conch piercing
Conch earrings can typically be purchased in 316L surgical steel or titanium. Both are recommended by professional piercers. There are some small benefits to using titanium over 316L surgical steel for conch (and other) piercings:
- Hypoallergenic: Titanium is completely hypoallergenic, which means that it is a great choice for those with sensitive skin or allergies. 316L surgical steel contains trace amounts of nickel - this does not bother most people but it can cause irritation or allergic reactions in some people.
- Biocompatible: Titanium is biocompatible, meaning that it is not harmful to living tissue. It is often used in medical implants for this reason.
- Lightweight: Titanium is lighter than 316L surgical steel, making it a little bit more comfortable to wear in piercings.
- Corrosion-resistant: Titanium is highly resistant to corrosion, which means that it will not rust or tarnish over time.
- Strength: Titanium is extremely strong and durable, which means that it is less likely to break or become damaged over time. This makes it a great choice for piercings that may be subjected to a lot of wear and tear.
Overall, both materials are very well suited to ear piercings of all types, but titanium is a slightly superior choice for piercings due to its hypoallergenic, biocompatible, lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and strong properties. It has a slightly higher price tag but the differences are not that great. While 316L surgical steel is also a good choice for piercings, those with sensitive skin or allergies may prefer titanium to avoid any potential irritation or allergic reactions.
