The three parts of a Claddagh each have a meaning. The heart represents love and passion, the hands friendship and unity, and the crown loyalty and commitment. Together, they make it a particularly thoughtful gift for someone whose place in your life you want to celebrate.
The name Claddagh is pronounced roughly ‘klah-duh’. It comes from the fishing village near Galway in Ireland, where the ring’s history is commonly traced to the 17th century.
One well-known legend tells of Richard Joyce, a fisherman who was captured by pirates and sold into slavery in Algeria. There, he learned goldsmithing. The story says he made the first Claddagh ring while thinking of the woman he hoped to return to, and gave it to her when he finally came home. It’s a story of love and endurance that has become closely tied to the ring.
Today, Claddagh rings are worn far beyond Ireland. They may be exchanged between partners, chosen for an engagement or wedding, or given to a close friend. For someone with Irish roots, the design can also be a small connection to family and heritage.
Many become keepsakes, passed from one generation to another. The meaning may deepen with the person who gives the ring and the memories it gathers over time.
